The Pizza Man Breezes For Shadwell

THE PIZZA MAN wins the Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap at Hawthorne Racecourse on 10-12-13 Jockey Francisco C. Torres up.

The Pizza Man (English Channel), most recently the winner of the GI Arlington Million Aug. 15, worked five furlongs Saturday morning over the Churchill main track and will prep for the Breeders’ Cup in the GI Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland Oct. 3.

“I thought he worked well,” trainer Roger Bruggemann said. “He and [champion sprinter] Work All Week (City Zip) are both great horses. You just have to stay out of their way.”

While the Midwest Thoroughbreds homebred earned his way into the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf with his Arlington success, connections are not ruling out a start in the shorter turf race, also a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race.

“We’ll just have to see how he runs in the [Shadwell] Mile,” he said. “We could have a couple of options. It’s kind of a stretch but anything can happen.”

Should all go well in the Breeders’ Cup, The Pizza Man has been invited to and is under serious consideration for the G1 Japan Cup Nov. 29.
